Peter Williams đã nhận tội hai cáo buộc đánh cắp bí mật thương mại tại bang Washington sau khi bán các công cụ tấn công mạng nhạy cảm cho một môi giới có liên hệ với Nga. Công tố viên cho biết bị cáo nhận khoảng 1,26 triệu USD bằng crypto trong ba năm, sau đó chi tiêu vào tài sản xa xỉ và đặt cọc mua bất động sản.
Theo hồ sơ của DoJ, Williams — công dân Úc và cư trú tại Mỹ — đã bán 8 thành phần khai thác lỗ hổng, bao gồm cả năng lực zero-day, vốn được phát triển cho cộng đồng tình báo Mỹ và chia sẻ trong liên minh Five Eyes gồm Mỹ, Anh, Canada, Úc và New Zealand. Các hợp đồng còn hứa hẹn thêm tới 4 triệu USD thanh toán.
Công tố viên cho biết thiệt hại với các công ty liên quan vượt 35 triệu USD và Williams vẫn tiếp tục giao dịch đến tháng 7/2025 dù đã biết bị Federal Bureau of Investigation điều tra. Bị cáo bị cáo buộc đã luân chuyển crypto qua các giao dịch ẩn danh trước khi quy đổi, chi hơn 715.000 USD cho du lịch, xe sang, trang sức và đặt cọc 1,5 triệu USD cho một bất động sản tại Washington.
Bên công tố đang đề nghị mức án 9 năm tù, bồi thường tối thiểu 35 triệu USD, phạt 250.000 USD và 3 năm quản chế. Vụ việc được xem là một trong những hồ sơ an ninh quốc gia gần đây cho thấy crypto ngày càng xuất hiện như phương tiện thanh toán trong các giao dịch liên quan gián điệp và công cụ tấn công mạng.
