The Ethereum Foundation announced that it will focus on “protocol priorities” in 2026, including accelerating transactions, expanding gas limits, upgrading smart wallets, improving cross-chain interoperability, and enhancing post-quantum security. The organization aims to raise the gas limit to over 100 million, potentially reaching 180 million, to improve the network’s processing capacity.
The Glamsterdam upgrade, scheduled for the first half of 2026, will be a technical focus, and the foundation has established a Post-Quantum group to prepare for risks from quantum computers. Additionally, Ethereum will push forward with abstracting base accounts and optimizing interactions between layer 2 solutions.
The foundation also emphasized that 2025 will be a productive year with two major upgrades and doubling the gas limit. Previously, co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared a vision of combining Ethereum and AI to empower people rather than replace them.
