UK to Ban Political Parties from Accepting Cryptocurrency Donations, Violators Could Face Criminal Penalties
Breaking News from Mars Finance: UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the government will implement a temporary ban on political party donations received via cryptocurrencies, citing risks related to illegal finance and foreign interference. During Prime Minister’s Questions, Starmer stated that this move is part of a broader effort to protect the integrity of the UK’s democratic system. The proposal will suspend all political donations made through cryptocurrencies while regulators develop clearer oversight mechanisms. Parties must return any cryptocurrency donations received after the rules take effect; failure to comply within the grace period could result in criminal penalties. The proposal is based on an assessment led by former senior civil servant Philip Rycroft, which highlighted the difficulty in tracing the origins of cryptocurrency transactions, complicating the enforcement of existing campaign finance rules. Previously, Reform UK was reported to have received tens of millions of pounds in cryptocurrency donations. Cross-party MPs have called for an immediate ban on crypto donations, citing unacceptable high risks to election fairness. As this ban is introduced, the UK is also advancing a broader digital asset regulatory framework covering stablecoins, trading platforms, and custodial services.
