Abstract generation in progress

This year, China has once again expanded its visa-free “friend circle” for outbound travelers, allowing holders of ordinary passports from Canada and the UK to transit for up to 30 days without a visa. As China’s “first stop” for visa-free entry, Shanghai has been continuously attracting overseas visitors with high-quality medical services in recent years, and the number of people coming for medical treatment has been steadily increasing. Data from the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission shows that in 2025, the city’s public hospitals served 73,200 foreign patients (those with foreign passports), an increase of over 8% compared to 67,600 in 2024. It is reported that Shanghai launched pilot programs for international medical (tourism) services in both private and public hospitals in 2020 and 2023, with service volume continuing to grow.
