I’ve been following this topic for years, and honestly it’s still fascinating. The mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto is one of the greatest enigmas in cryptography and finance. Here is my summary after doing quite a bit of research.
Basically, Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonym of the creator ( or creators; no one really knows ) who published the whitepaper of Bitcoin in 2008 and launched the network in 2009. The paper was called "Bitcoin: a peer-to-peer electronic cash system" and it changed everything. The crazy part is that in 2011 Satoshi simply disappeared. He cut off all communications and never spoke again.
What we do know is that Satoshi claimed to be a man, Japanese, born on April 5, 1975. But here’s the strange part: his English was impeccable, like a native speaker, and his communications mainly took place during European hours. So many believe he either lied about his origin or was simply a pseudonym for a group.
There are several strong candidates. Hal Finney was one of the first users and received the first Bitcoin transaction. He was a developer and a cypherpunk from the 1990s. He died in 2014 but always denied being Satoshi. Then there’s Nick Szabo, who had created "bit gold" years earlier, and his writing style matches Satoshi’s a lot. Next is Dorian Nakamoto, literally a guy with that birth name who worked in tech and lived near Hal. But all of them denied being Satoshi or walked back their claims.
In October 2024, a documentary from HBO called "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" was released, directed by Cullen Hoback. Supposedly, it was going to reveal who Satoshi is, but well, the mystery remains.
Now for the financial part: Satoshi has approximately one million bitcoins that haven’t been spent since 2009. That means that in 2024 prices, his holdings would be valued at over $61 billion. Literally one of the richest people on the planet, but no one knows who it is.
The truth is, we’ll probably never find out who Satoshi Nakamoto is. It could be a single person, a group, someone alive or dead. And honestly, many in the crypto community believe it should remain a mystery. What’s clear is that Satoshi HODLed a bunch of BTC—and that’s a fact.
