On April 8, U.S. President Trump stated in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday morning that following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday, the U.S. may seek to establish a joint project with Iran to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz. When asked whether Tehran would be allowed to charge for shipping through this strategic waterway, Trump replied, “We are considering implementing it as a joint venture. This is a way to protect the strait—also a way to prevent many other countries from interfering.” Trump added, “This is a very nice thing.” He also stated that he would not allow Iran to retain any uranium enrichment capabilities, despite Tehran’s repeated claims that it will not give up its right to do so. Trump indicated that U.S. troops in the region would not withdraw, suggesting they would remain to enforce any agreements reached in the future. He anticipates that peace negotiations will begin on Friday and will progress quickly.
