U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker said in an interview with Fox News that NATO “must not only protect Europe and ensure Europe’s security, but also needs to give the United States some benefits and advantages.”

He also said that otherwise the United States would be “providing security for Europe without any reciprocity whatsoever.”

Whitaker made the remarks in response to questions about Trump’s criticism of NATO, mentioning that some European allies have blocked the United States from using bases and flying over airspace.

He said: “We also see that some allies are simply unwilling to say they are standing with the United States, and they are also unwilling to take part in solving the problem.”
