【Caixin Global】 At the 2026 annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia, Hu Zuliu, founder and chairman of the Primavera Capital Group, said that discussions about IPOs have been lively in China’s capital markets, while M&A deals have been relatively inactive, yet little attention has been paid to them. He suggested that it would be beneficial to increase the activity level of M&A transactions and help make the capital markets more robust.

On March 27, Hu Zuliu shared the above views during a discussion session themed “Creating a Sound Market Environment and Promoting Long-Term Value Investing.” He specifically noted that one of the major difficulties currently facing China’s economy is what is known as “involution,” along with excess production capacity. In fact, one very effective way to absorb surplus capacity is through M&A; a highly active M&A market can drive industry consolidation.
