【Caixin】 Films released during the Qingming holiday lack box-office pull. Data from the National Film Special Fund Office shows that during the Qingming holiday (April 4–April 6), nationwide box-office revenue was 305 million yuan, down 19% year over year. In addition, according to Maoyan Pro, attendance during the holiday totaled 8.01M visits, down 13.8% year over year.

From the supply side, the Qingming slate features 13 new releases, up four year over year; in addition, there are also popular older films such as Savior Plan before the holiday that continue to run. Total screenings during the holiday increased by 40k compared with last year, and the average ticket price also fell by 2 yuan, but audiences still slipped.

The Qingming holiday is the first holiday season after the Spring Festival. It generally focuses on domestic mid-to-low-budget commercial films and imported titles. From 2021 to today, box office in the same period reached 842 million yuan in 2024, driven by Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live?; in the past two years it has remained stable at around 300 million yuan, at historically low levels.
