Just checked my refund status again and it still says 'return being processed'... been like that for weeks now. Started wondering what that actually means, so I looked it up and honestly it's not as bad as I thought. Turns out when you see that message, it just means the IRS actually has your return and is working through it. Kind of a relief knowing they didn't lose it or anything went wrong with them receiving it. The refund processed meaning is basically that you're in the queue and your money should be coming soon - either direct deposit or check. Most of the time the IRS can handle these within 21 days from when they get it, but yeah, sometimes it takes longer. There's a bunch of reasons why your refund processed status might be stuck though. Could be missing forms, math errors, Social Security number mismatch, or if they suspect identity theft. Even amended returns take extra time. If you want to avoid getting stuck in processing limbo, file online instead of paper, use direct deposit, triple-check all your info before submitting, and make sure it goes to the right IRS center. I've heard people say if your refund is taking way longer than normal, call the IRS but good luck with that - apparently only like 1 in 9 people actually get through. When you do call, apparently early morning around 7 a.m. works best, or randomly late afternoon around 6 or 6:30 p.m. right before they close. Anyway, the fact that your return being processed just means they have it is actually pretty good news. Means it's moving forward.
