Iran Situation | Trump Says US and Iran Are in Intense Negotiations, Good News Expected According to Reports
After Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif proposed the “two-week plan” to put the U.S.-Iran situation on hold, sources said that good news is expected to come out from both the U.S. and Iran soon, with a final agreement expected to be reached before Tuesday night (the 7th) local time.
In an interview with the media, U.S. President Trump said the U.S. is currently engaged in intense negotiations over a war with Iran, but did not disclose any more details. He also said he is about to receive a complete briefing on the “two-week ceasefire” proposal put forward by the Pakistan prime minister. U.S. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt earlier told the media that Trump has already received Pakistan’s latest proposal on the current situation and will respond.
Citing diplomatic sources, Israel’s public broadcaster said that as Trump’s deadline for Iran is approaching, contacts between the U.S. and Iran have made some progress. All parties are working to push for a temporary ceasefire and are exploring the possibility of gradually reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Sharif earlier posted on social media saying, “Diplomatic efforts aimed at peacefully bringing an end to the current war in the Middle East are being advanced steadily and forcefully, and we expect tangible success in the near term.” To leave room for the diplomatic process, he asked Trump to postpone the “final deadline” for negotiations with Iran by two weeks, and at the same time asked the “brothers in Iran” to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks as a show of goodwill.
An Iranian senior official told other media that Tehran is actively considering Pakistan’s request for a “two-week ceasefire.” Pakistan has recently served as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran, helping to relay messages.
Trump’s final deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz will expire at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday (U.S. Eastern time) (8:00 a.m. Wednesday Hong Kong time). Earlier, he posted on social media threatening Iran, saying, “Tonight, the entire civilization will perish, never to return,” and demanding that Iran either reach an agreement or face a large-scale strike by U.S. forces on Iran’s civilian infrastructure.
