On March 12, local time, the United Nations Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said at a regular press briefing that, according to the UN Refugee Agency’s latest data, since this latest escalation of the situation in the Middle East, more than 4.1 million people have been internally displaced within Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, and Pakistan, while around 117k people have fled to other countries to seek asylum. The UN Refugee Agency noted that, in Iran alone, between 600k and 1 million Iranian households—about 3.2 million people—have been internally displaced by the conflict, and most of them are fleeing from the capital Tehran and other major cities to the northern regions of the country and rural areas. The UN Refugee Agency said this is only a preliminary assessment, and as the conflict continues, the figure is very likely to keep rising. Dujarric emphasized that all sides to the conflict must protect civilians, ensure that humanitarian aid corridors remain open, and keep borders open to people seeking safety in accordance with the international obligations of their respective countries.
