Media: Progress in US-Iran negotiations shows "positive developments," bringing a ceasefire closer than expected by the public
Israeli media reported on the evening of the 7th that, as a deadline set by U.S. President Trump for Iran is about to expire, some progress has been made in U.S.-Iran contacts. All parties are working to push for a temporary ceasefire and are exploring the possibility of gradually reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Citing diplomatic sources, Israel Public Broadcasting reported that Pakistan has proposed a two-week extension of the deadline. Consultations are reportedly underway intensively, and relevant contacts have shown “positive progress,” but no final agreement has yet been reached.
According to a report on the website of Israel’s “New Message” newspaper, the relevant contacts are moving in the direction of reaching a temporary ceasefire, during which the Strait of Hormuz may gradually resume opening. The report cites statements from regional intelligence officials, saying that the parties are closer to a ceasefire than the outside world expects, and they are trying to work out some kind of arrangement before the deadline arrives.
Citing statements from military sources, Israel’s Channel 12 television reported that the direction of the current situation remains unclear and it may “go toward fighting, or it may reach an agreement.” The Israeli side is preparing for various scenarios, including a ceasefire, a framework agreement, and expanding military operations. The report also said that Israeli officials will describe the coming few hours as a “critical moment,” and they are concerned about the possibility that the U.S. and Iran may reach a certain deadline extension or a framework-type agreement at the last moment, believing that the relevant arrangements may not fully meet Israel’s interests and demands.
As the deadline approaches, on the evening of the 7th the Israeli military issued a statement warning that attacks against Israel may escalate in the coming few hours. It called on the public to remain vigilant and follow civil defense instructions.
On the 7th, when Trump accepted a telephone interview with a reporter from the U.S. Fox News Channel, he said that the U.S. is currently engaged in “intense negotiations” over the Iran war, but he refused to reveal more details. On the 6th, Trump reiterated that whether the Iran war is about to escalate or is nearing its end depends on Iran’s response to the “final deadline” he set at 20:00 Eastern Time on the 7th. On the 7th, he posted a threat to Iran on social media, saying: “Tonight, the whole of civilization will perish. I don’t want such a thing to happen, but it may happen.”
