U.S. President Trump, in a social media post on Tuesday, threatened Iran, saying, “Tonight, the whole of civilization will end—never to return.” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said that statements threatening to wipe out “the whole of civilization” are outrageous.

In the statement, Türk condemned the inflammatory remarks about the conflict in the Middle East, especially the latest rhetoric calling for the destruction of the entire civilization and threats targeting civilian infrastructure. He said, “Such statements are outrageous, and carrying out such threats constitutes the most serious international crimes.”

Türk said that threats that spread fear and create panic among civilians are unacceptable and must be stopped immediately. He said that under international law, intentionally attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure constitutes war crimes.
