【Caixin Net】 The Qingming holiday film slate lacks box-office pull. According to data from the National Film Specialized Fund Office, during the Qingming holiday (April 4–April 6) the nationwide box office revenue was 305 million yuan, down 19% year over year. Also, according to Maoyan Pro, the number of moviegoers during the holiday was 8.01M, down 13.8% year over year.

From the supply side, there were 13 new releases in the Qingming slate, up four year over year; in addition, popular back-catalog titles such as the pre-holiday hit Rescue Plan also continued to run. The total number of screenings during the holiday increased by 40k compared with last year, and the average ticket price also decreased by 2 yuan, but audience attendance still declined.

The Qingming slate is the first holiday season after the Spring Festival. It generally features domestic mid-to-low-budget commercial films and imported titles. From 2021 to date, box office in the same period reached 842 million yuan in 2024, boosted by Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live? In the past two years, it has remained stable at around 300 million yuan, which is at a historical low level.
