On the morning of April 6, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2026 Global Alumni Homecoming Day event themed “Yuan Gathers for Bainian · Create a Shared Future” was held at the Ho Ying Dong Sports Center in the Minhang Campus. The event brought together the full body of university leadership, representatives of academicians from the two academies, board of directors representatives, and Jiao Tong alumni from across the globe. Guests included the Party Secretary of the university, Yang Zhenbin; the President, Ding Kuiling, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Ma Dexiu, former Party Secretary; Xie Shengwu, former President; Jiang Sixian, former Party Secretary; Zhang Jie, former President, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Lin Zhongqin, former President, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and others. Some alumni and teacher-student representatives watched the live broadcast of the event at the Wen Zhi Hall in the Xuhui Campus, the Li Zhengdao Library Auditorium in the Minhang Campus, the Wu Weiquan Hall, and venues of various schools and departments. The event was hosted by Pan Chen, a 1998 undergraduate alumnus of the School of Media and Communication, and Liu Jiangxian, a 2011 master’s alumnus of the Antai School of Economics and Management.

Before the event began, a solemn ceremony for playing and singing the national anthem was held on-site. Last year, on April 8, 2006, the university was gifted a national flag with registration number 2006-0140 that was raised and hoisted on the day of the 110th anniversary of the university’s founding at Tiananmen Square. Today, this national flag was hoisted at the event site. All attendees stood at attention facing the national flag and sang the national anthem in unison.

“Seek the Source to Go Far, Co-write a New Chapter”

On behalf of the university and Party Secretary Yang Zhenbin, Ding Kuiling extended a warm welcome to all guests, offered sincere greetings to Jiao Tong alumni around the world, and expressed heartfelt thanks to members of all sectors of society who care about and support the development of Jiao Tong University. He briefly reviewed the university’s achievements in recent years in areas including talent cultivation, faculty development, scientific research, social services, innovative cultural inheritance and development, and international exchange and cooperation. Overall, the university’s comprehensive planning has been continuously optimized, its innovation vitality has increased day by day, its international reputation has continued to rise, and it has taken solid steps on the new journey of building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

He emphasized that building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics is the shared dream pursued with dedication by generations of Jiao Tong people. It requires continuous efforts from all faculty, staff, students, and medical workers, and also cannot be separated from the joint efforts of alumni. The “Shanghai Jiao Tong University President’s Award” is the highest honor in the field of spiritual and cultural civilization at Jiao Tong. It is awarded to recognize outstanding faculty, staff, and medical workers who have made prominent contributions in promoting the patriotic and dedicated struggle spirit, practicing core socialist values, inheriting Jiao Tong culture, and highlighting the spirit of Jiao Tong. Following the selection process, ten individuals and collectives—including Tian Xinmin, Yang Zhibiao, Zhang Bolong, Jia Renbing, Yao Zhirong, Kim Siang Khaw, the 9110 security service team, the Institute of Underwater Engineering, the School of Medicine’s Institute of Molecular Medicine, and the “Mingyuan Project” team—were awarded the 2026 Shanghai Jiao Tong University President’s Award.

Since 2009, the university has carried out the selection of the “Outstanding Alumni Award.” The “Thoughtful Source Contribution Award” is used to commend outstanding alumni who always have the mother school in their hearts and lend strong support to it. The “Outstanding Alumni Excellence Achievement Award” is used to honor and commend alumni who have made outstanding contributions to national prosperity, national rejuvenation, and human progress. At the meeting, the 2026 Outstanding Alumni Awards were announced. A group of alumni were respectively honored with the “Outstanding Alumni Excellence Achievement Award,” the “Outstanding Alumni Thoughtful Source Contribution Outstanding Merits Award,” the “Outstanding Alumni Thoughtful Source Contribution Merit Award,” the “Outstanding Alumni Thoughtful Source Contribution Outstanding Award,” and the “Outstanding Alumni Thoughtful Source Contribution Commemorative Award.”

The spirit of the motto has sunk deep into the bone

“The mother school’s academic tradition of ‘seeking truth and pursuing truthfulness’ and the motto spirit of ‘think of the source when you drink the water, and uphold the nation to honor the school’ have long been deeply embedded in my bones, becoming the fundamental principle I follow in how I做人 and how I do things from here onward.” Chen Guangming, a member of Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s board of directors; a Jiao Tong alumnus from the Mechanical and Power Engineering School, class of 1992 (undergraduate) and class of 1996 (master’s); and founder of Rayuan Fund Management Co., Ltd., delivered remarks as a representative of the awardee alumni.

“Today, we came from all over the world to return to this forever spiritual home. The deepest feeling I have is that no matter how many years have passed since graduation, and no matter where we are, our mother school is always our most solid backing and warmest harbor. We have achieved a little, insignificant success, and our mother school is proud of us; we want to do a few practical things for the country and for society, and our mother school gives us the firmest support. This care that crosses mountains and seas, this warmth that nourishes things silently—these are the most precious treasures of a lifetime for all Jiao Tong people. In the future, even if the world’s situation becomes complicated, I will still anchor my original aspiration, hold fast to the direction, and continue to move forward side by side with the mother school. Together with all Jiao Tong people, we will unlock more possibilities and create more glory on the journey of national rejuvenation.”

Keeping forward with guidance from the stars

On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s founding, Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s scientists joined hands with the Purple Mountain Observatory to apply for naming the asteroid numbered 599587 as “Shanghai Jiao Tong Star.” Academician Jing Yipeng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences read out the international naming announcement for “Shanghai Jiao Tong Star.” Ding Kuiling, on behalf of the university, accepted the bronze plaque of “Shanghai Jiao Tong Star” presented by Zhao Changyin, Director of the Purple Mountain Observatory. All Jiao Tong people around the world will follow the guidance of the starlight, keep advancing along the path of exploring the truth, and let the Jiao Tong spirit shine even more brilliantly across a broader universe.

On April 6, 2025, the university launched the global alumni “Seek the Source to Go Far · Bainian Legendary” event featuring the transmission of a co-narrated flag by Jiao Tong people worldwide. This flag, infused with the deep affection among Jiao Tong alumni around the world, was successfully completed over the span of one year: it was delivered across all 130 stations, covering 39 countries and regions, with more than 20k teachers, students, and alumni participating together. At the event site, Wang Shun, a 2013 undergraduate alumnus of the Antai School of Economics and Management and the swimming champion of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, escorted the school flag into the venue and then presented the flag to Yang Zhenbin. The flag’s transmission symbolizes the continuing spirit of “choosing Jiao Tong means choosing responsibility,” and also conveys the values of “when you go out from Jiao Tong, you must bravely take on your mission.”

Today, more than 10,000 alumni are returning to their mother school with their families. In campuses including Xuhui, Minhang, and others, Jiao Tong people revisit the campus and enjoy meeting one another immensely. They stroll along familiar campus paths, recount the youthful impressions through the years, and everywhere are feelings of reunion joy and the warmth of home.

On “Alumni Homecoming Day,” alumni participated in multiple activities: the 30th-anniversary homecoming themed event for undergraduate alumni from the class of 1992; the Antai people’s day creative carnival and the Zhi Yuan Lake lawn music festival; the opening ceremony for the Luoyang Peony Garden; as well as homecoming activities carefully organized by each school and department. Together, they shared the classmate and thoughtful source bonds, and celebrated the mother school’s Bainian anniversary.
