Former Xiaomi and ByteDance hardware executive Xu Rui joins Meta: to lead the newly formed AI hardware team
Fenghuang.com Technology, April 4: According to AI Faner, Xu Rui, a former hardware business executive at Xiaomi and ByteDance, will become the head of the newly formed AI hardware team within Meta’s MSL (Super Intelligent Lab).
It is understood that led by Alexandr Wang, MSL will establish an entirely new AI hardware team, and Xu Rui will take part in the formation and leadership of this new department.
It is said that Xu Rui has previously served as a hardware business expert and executive at internet tech companies including Xiaomi, ByteDance, Intel, Amazon, and Lenovo.
Between 2015 and 2017, Xu Rui worked at Xiaomi, where he managed Xiaomi TV’s global team, responsible for analyzing the global smart TV and set-top box markets, and for developing Xiaomi TV’s global product roadmap. He was one of the core members of the early Xiaomi TV/box team and experienced throughout the pivotal period when Xiaomi transitioned from a single smartphone manufacturer to the MiJia/AIoT ecosystem chain.
Between 2020 and 2022, Xu Rui served as the head of hardware R&D at ByteDance. He managed the new stone hardware laboratory with more than 200 hardware and software engineers, and led the development of products such as the Nut smartphone and the powerful smart learning lamp.
Before joining Meta, Xu Rui had served as COO of K-Scale Labs, a Silicon Valley humanoid robotics startup; by the end of 2025, K-Scale shut down due to funding issues. Afterwards, Xu Rui joined Dreamer, an AI hardware company founded by his former colleagues and former Xiaomi vice president Hugo Barra, where he served as a product manager.
