Local time on March 18, Turkey’s Ministry of National Defense announced that, to strengthen airspace security, NATO would redeploy a “Patriot” air-defense missile system from Germany to be stationed at the Kıyırcık Air Base in southern Turkey. Currently, a same-type system deployed by Spain in the region is already in operation. Earlier this month, the Kıyırcık Air Base had also sounded an air-defense alert. Turkey’s Ministry of National Defense later confirmed that a ballistic missile launched from the direction of Iran, after entering Turkish airspace, was intercepted and destroyed by NATO’s air defense and missile defense system deployed in the eastern Mediterranean. This is the third ballistic missile launched from the direction of Iran within 10 days that entered Turkish airspace. Iran has denied all of them and has proposed setting up a joint committee to investigate. (CCTV News)
