Recently, on social media platforms, multiple users have reported that their Shanghai Pudong Development Bank credit cards were subject to large unauthorized transactions in countries such as Brazil around September 9, i.e., card fraud. Many of these cardholders are not in Brazil, and some have even never been to Brazil before, not understanding why this transaction appeared out of nowhere.

The reporter from found that on a certain social platform, in a group chat formed by the affected fraud victims, the number of members has already exceeded 100.

In the early hours of September 13, the credit card center of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank announced that the center had, immediately upon receiving it, launched an emergency response with the Mastercard organization, promptly detecting and blocking the risk.

The bank said: “Due to an external attack”

Cardholder Xiao Pan (a pseudonym) said that an anomalous transaction on his credit card took place on September 9, but he did not receive a transaction text message that day. He only received the posting message on September 11.

There were also cardholders who, after receiving the posting message, contacted the customer service of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. The response they received was: “First report to the police, and keep the police report receipt. ”

At the same time, the other party said, “In the next stage, the relevant departments will follow up and contact you. During the investigation, you do not need to temporarily bear the amount of this transaction. Please rest assured. If there are any other circumstances or feedback, we will also contact you in a timely manner.”

In addition, customer service also clearly stated: “If the subsequent investigation confirms that it is a fraud incident and you bear no responsibility, the bank will assume the related fraud losses.”

On the evening of September 15, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank told the reporter from : “Due to an external attack, some Mastercard cardholders of our partner banks were affected. Our Pudong Development Bank card center, together with our partners, promptly discovered and blocked the risk and issued an announcement, working to fully protect the rights and interests of cardholders and ensure that customers do not bear losses that should not be borne by them. Our card center has already contacted the affected customers one by one, and done a good job of communication and explanation.”

Based on transaction information screenshots provided by multiple cardholders, in these anomalous transactions, the amount per transaction is mostly around 4900BRL (Brazilian real, the main currency in circulation in Brazil), which converts to roughly 6,400 yuan RMB, apparently intended to avoid 5000BRL. Judging from the merchant categories for consumption, some are “used car dealerships,” some are “dining venues and restaurants,” and others are “taxi services.”

Someone was defrauded in 4 transactions in total

Cardholder Xiao Lei (a pseudonym) revealed that he was defrauded in 4 transactions in total, all of which occurred in Brazil, totaling close to 20000BRL.

The reporter learned that in this large-scale card fraud incident, the affected credit cards are mostly the world cards issued by Shanghai Pudong Development Bank in cooperation with Mastercard, also known as the “Red Sand Xuan” credit cards.

It is understood that the Red Sand Xuan card comes in two versions: the new version and the old version. The old version mainly serves overseas consumption. In May 2024, the card was iterated into the new version’s dual-application chip card, which can be used both domestically and abroad.

Many of the cardholders involved said that they have the old-version Red Sand Xuan cards.

It is understood that compared with the magnetic stripe cards in the past, chip cards are considered relatively safer in terms of technical principles, because the magnetic stripe information on magnetic stripe cards is easier to be copied.

The China Banking Association previously issued a notice warning that one of the important reasons for card fraud is that the cardholder’s card is skimmed, personal information is leaked, or the card is used improperly. Consumers should enhance awareness of transaction security, apply for and use cards through official channels, and do not readily hand over personal information to others for assistance. Do not lend or rent out your own credit card or debit card to others under any circumstances, so as to prevent criminals from using it to cause adverse consequences. When swiping or tapping to pay, do not allow the card to leave your sight, keep track of the number of times you swipe, and retrieve it promptly after use. For old or no longer used cards, promptly complete account closure procedures and do not discard them arbitrarily.

In addition, while online payments bring convenience to production and daily life, they also come with certain risks. If criminals illegally obtain the cardholder’s online transaction identity recognition information and transaction verification information, they may be able to carry out card fraud. Consumers should protect personal information security such as the login password, withdrawal password, and verification codes of financial accounts, and not provide them to third parties. At the same time, be sure to identify the authenticity of online service channels to avoid information being stolen by criminals through “phishing” methods—for example, remain vigilant about unknown phone calls, text messages, and suspicious links; do not download non-official apps; and do not register personal information such as ID cards, bank cards, passwords, and verification codes on unsafe network interfaces or in unsafe network environments.
