Recently, I frequently need to use temporary phone numbers, such as testing verification code interfaces or registering overseas accounts. Buying new SIM cards is not cost-effective, and I later discovered the SMS verification platform, which is a lifesaver. Basically, it uses virtual SMS numbers to replace real numbers for receiving SMS verification codes, so you don't have to worry about privacy leaks and can quickly handle various testing needs.

I've experienced quite a few pitfalls myself, trying several platforms—some simply don't receive messages, others have huge delays. In the end, I summarized five decent ones to share. SMS-Activate is the most user-friendly, with verification codes arriving within about 10 seconds, and it covers a particularly wide range of countries, making it especially suitable for cross-border application testing. Super Cloud SMS has good optimization for domestic number segments; US numbers receive messages in 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers even faster, within 5-20 seconds, though sometimes it gets stuck during peak times. 5SIM has a friendly interface and clear API documentation; registering for Google, Twitter, and others is no problem. Xiaoniao Verification mainly targets domestic applications, with fast speed and good cost performance, but occasionally numbers get flagged by risk control, and switching to another number solves the issue. Getsmscode is cheap and suitable for occasional use, but verification codes for less common platforms may experience delays.

When using these virtual SMS number platforms, there are a few pitfalls to avoid. First, some numbers are shared, which can easily be flagged as risky numbers; it's recommended to prepare several backup numbers. Second, verification codes can sometimes be delayed, especially for less common countries or apps. If you don't receive the message, try switching to another number. Also, don't use virtual numbers as long-term primary numbers, as privacy and security can't be guaranteed. If you're just testing interfaces, choosing a platform that supports API is enough, but if you need stable registration for a specific overseas website, it's best to buy multiple numbers at once so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid. Many platforms support one-click number switching, which is very practical and saves a lot of trouble. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best, with low delays and wide coverage, definitely worth trying.
