A few years ago, something happened that the crypto community will never forget. Nikolai Mushegian, co-founder of MakerDAO and a quite influential figure in the space, was found dead on a beach in Puerto Rico under circumstances that still spark debate today.
Here’s what happened: in October 2022, Nikolai Mushegian posted a series of very strong tweets talking about intelligence agencies, human trafficking networks, and threats against his life. Hours later, his body was found on Condado Beach in San Juan. He had a small laceration on his head, but nothing else.
Authorities said it was drowning. The beach is known for its dangerous currents, and there have been other drownings there. Close friends confirmed that Mushegian had been dealing with mental health issues. Some, like Brock Pierce, suggested it could have been self-inflicted.
But here’s what the community has never stopped questioning: the timing of everything. The tweets, the location, the details. Within crypto circles, many continued to speculate about what really happened to Nikolai Mushegian. Some see the official story as incomplete, others believe there’s more than what is publicly known.
Nikolai Mushegian’s story became one of those conspiracy theories that the crypto community never stopped discussing. It remains a reminder of how complicated life can be in this space, especially when you’re in the public eye. Sometimes, the darkest stories are the ones that make us think the most.
