LG Energy Solution sues luxury car Korean company for infringement, targeting Chinese battery manufacturers

LG Energy Solution has applied for a patent injunction against Fujian Automobile, alleging that its SUV EX30 is equipped with batteries from China’s Sunwoda. At the same time, the company has also applied to the Korea Trade Commission to investigate alleged unfair trade practices and has filed a similar request against Nissan. Industry insiders believe this move is mainly intended to put pressure on Sunwoda.

Yonhap News Agency, citing industry sources, reported that battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution recently filed a patent injunction against Volvo Cars’ Korea unit (Volvo; in mainland China, referred to as Volvo Cars) applying for the injunction. The specific target is Volvo’s SUV EX30. It is equipped with a rectangular ternary lithium battery (NCM) made by China’s battery manufacturer, CATL.

LG Energy Solution also, through the patent pool management organization Tulip Innovation, applied to South Korea’s trade committee under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (South Korea) for an investigation into unfair trade practices; the trade committee has already decided to launch the investigation. Tulip Innovation also sought a patent injunction against Nissan by applying to the Munich district court in Germany, arguing that the CATL batteries installed in Nissan’s hybrid SUV Qashqai infringe LG Energy Solution’s patents.

The relevant patents involve the “integrated structural technology of electrode components and coated separators,” which has been recognized as LG Energy Solution’s exclusive technology.

Industry widely believes that, on the surface, LG Energy Solution is targeting whole-vehicle manufacturers, but in reality it is applying pressure on CATL by filing for patent injunctions.
