【Caixin Global】 The 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit will be held in China. On March 25, Singapore’s former foreign minister, Yang Rongwen, said while attending the 2026 Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference that zero-sum games are spreading across many parts of the world. He hopes the Chinese side, as the host of APEC, will set an optimistic and forward-looking tone and bring a positive-sum way of thinking.

In 2001 and 2014, China hosted APEC summits in Shanghai and Beijing, respectively. Yang Rongwen specifically noted that when the 2001 Shanghai APEC summit was held, when U.S. government officials first came to attend, the atmosphere was tense. After the dialogue began, the atmosphere gradually eased. Today, the Asia-Pacific region has again fallen into a tense atmosphere, and once again it is China’s summit that can play a role.
