Satellite imagery company Planet Labs said Saturday that, at the request of the U.S. government, it will indefinitely pause the publication of satellite images of Iran and areas affected by the Middle East conflict.

Planet Labs, headquartered in California, announced the decision in an email to its customers, saying that the U.S. government has required all satellite imagery providers to indefinitely hold back publication of images of that conflict area.

The restriction is an upgrade to the 14-day delayed release policy for Middle East imagery implemented by the company last month. Planet Labs said the move is intended to prevent hostile forces from using the relevant imagery to attack the United States and its allies.

Planet Labs said it will suspend the release of related imagery from March 9 onward, and expects the policy to remain in effect until the conflict ends.

The conflict began on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Iran then retaliated, launching attacks on Israel as well as U.S. military bases in Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain, causing the conflict to spread across the region.
