Mainland Chinese media citing multiple sources report that former Managing Director and Chief China Economist of HKEX (00388), Ba Shusong, has recently gone missing. The news indicates that he has been taken away for investigation by relevant authorities, but details of the case are not yet known.

Public records show that HKEX established the Mainland Affairs Department in April 2015 and made several senior appointments, including appointing Ba Shusong as Chief China Economist. At that time, HKEX mentioned that before taking on this role, Ba Shusong served as Deputy Director of the Financial Research Institute at the Development Research Center of the State Council, Chief Economist of the China Banking Association, a member of the Hong Kong Economic Development Council, and a senior visiting scholar at Columbia Business School, University of Columbia.

Ba Shusong last appeared as an HKEX executive six months ago. On October 22, 2025, during the “China Opportunity Forum” held in Shanghai, Ba Shusong still attended the meeting as Managing Director and Chief China Economist of HKEX.

However, by March 2026, Ba Shusong’s name was no longer listed among the management in HKEX’s 2025 annual report. HKEX confirmed that Ba Shusong had left HKEX at the end of 2025 and that he had served as a non-full-time advisor before his departure.

Ba Shusong is a doctoral supervisor at a mainland university. Sources say that he has not spoken in group chats since mid-March. Previously, he often shared various messages in the doctoral student groups under his supervision.

According to the official website of Peking University HSBC Business School, Ba Shusong is currently a professor at Peking University HSBC Business School and the Executive Dean of the Peking University HSBC Financial Research Institute.
