Chinese Chemical Society "Chemistry is Everywhere" Science Popularization Activity Enters Kunming
(Source: China Chemical News)
China Chemical News reported that from March 5 to 8, the second season of the China Chemical Society’s “Chemistry Everywhere” themed science popularization event partnered with a public class aimed at improving high school students’ chemistry literacy, visiting Kunming City, Yunnan Province. Over 300 high school students and teachers from 38 middle schools in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region participated in this activity.
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and researcher at the Kunming Institute of Botany, Hao Xiaojing, was the guest speaker for the 17th installment of the “Chemistry Experts Talk” series of science popularization lectures. He delivered a themed report titled “Research Practice and Review of Plant Chemistry.” Starting from plant diversity, he systematically explained the core research objects of plant chemistry and used classic achievements such as aspirin and artemisinin to illustrate the important applications of natural plant products in drug development. Combining his long-term scientific research experience, Academician Hao shared the latest advances in the field of natural products and recounted his journey from initial interest in chemistry to deep engagement in passionate scientific research, encouraging students to set clear goals, persevere through setbacks, and explore relentlessly.
Duan Liangfei, Director of the Experimental Center at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Yunnan Normal University, gave a report titled “Technology Changes Perspectives—The Fascinating Science of Liquid Metal Surface Materials.” He introduced liquid metals as the starting point, showcasing their disruptive applications in flexible electronics, smart wearables, and biomedical fields. Through fun small experiments, he invited students to experience the unique fluidity and ductility of liquid metals firsthand. Additionally, Professor Jian Pei from Peking University’s School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, and Professor Xin Lü from Xiamen University’s School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, delivered courses on organic chemistry and structural chemistry.
It is reported that the China Chemical Society’s “Chemistry Everywhere” themed science popularization activity was launched in September 2024 and has now held 17 sessions consecutively.
