Accenture acquires Ookla, the parent company of Speedtest, for $1.2 billion
IT Home, March 4th: Accenture announced yesterday (March 3rd) that it has acquired Ookla from Ziff Davis for $1.2 billion (Note: at current exchange rates, approximately 8.298 billion RMB). Ookla’s main businesses include the speed testing tool Speedtest and the service status monitoring platform Downdetector.
Accenture CEO Julie Sweet stated that after acquiring Ookla, the company will use its data to help clients safely expand AI applications and build a reliable, seamless connection with trustworthy data.
Accenture’s current public sector clients include the U.S. Air Force, the Social Security Administration, and the State Department. This deal is expected to further enhance its technical support for these agencies.
For everyday users, Speedtest and Downdetector are the go-to tools for testing internet speeds and checking the availability of websites, banks, and other services. Media outlets often cite Downdetector data to report on network outages.
Ookla claims that Speedtest collects and analyzes billions of mobile network samples daily, covering radio signal strength, network coverage, and quality metrics for video streaming, gaming, and web browsing. Its B2B clients include telecom operators, regulators, and analysts.
Meanwhile, Downdetector Explorer, as a monitoring tool, helps streaming services, banks, and social networks detect service outages.
Once the acquisition is complete, Accenture will leverage Speedtest and Downdetector data to provide consulting services to clients. An Accenture spokesperson said they plan to maintain Ookla’s current business operations, but for individual users, there may be adjustments to privacy policies and other potential changes after the acquisition.
