A wooden vessel carrying approximately 50 migrants experienced a catastrophic capsize incident south of Crete during the weekend. The tragedy has resulted in at least five confirmed deaths, with more than 20 individuals still unaccounted for. The disaster unfolded early on a Saturday morning when the small boat encountered severe maritime conditions.

Treacherous Conditions Trigger the Maritime Emergency

The vessel found itself battling exceptionally challenging sea conditions at the time of the incident. According to reports via RTHK, force 6 winds swept across the area, generating waves measuring roughly 2.5 meters in height. These adverse conditions placed immense strain on the wooden boat and its human cargo. As rescue teams approached the distressed vessel, a critical moment occurred: many passengers aboard rushed toward one side of the boat in hopes of reaching safety. This sudden shift in weight distribution compromised the vessel’s stability, ultimately causing it to lose balance and capsize in the turbulent waters.

Challenging Rescue and Recovery Efforts

Following the capsize, rescue operations mobilized quickly. A Panama-flagged cargo ship in the vicinity successfully rescued 20 individuals from the water. The Greek Coast Guard coordinated with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency to locate survivors and victims. Recovery teams discovered several bodies floating in the sea and have been working to identify all fatalities and missing persons.

Ongoing Search Operations Continue

Authorities remain deeply concerned about the rising casualty count and continue systematic search and rescue missions throughout the area. Multiple vessels from both Greek authorities and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency are still actively engaged in recovery efforts. Officials fear additional bodies may yet be discovered as the comprehensive search operation persists, underscoring the severe consequences when migrants attempt dangerous maritime crossings in unpredictable weather conditions.
