Startup OpenAI has crossed 900 million weekly users for its popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, cementing its lead and intensifying the race with Alphabet GOOGL -0.10% ▼ .

This comes as earlier reports had indicated that OpenAI’s ChatGPT user base growth was crawling while Google’s Gemini was ballooning, helping the Alphabet subsidiary close in on ChatGPT.

OpenAI Hits 50M Paying Subscribers

Nick Turley, a vice president at OpenAI and the head of the ChatGPT app, disclosed the numbers on Friday in a Twitter post. He also revealed that the chatbot, which pioneered mainstream generative AI, has reached 50 million paying subscribers.

“For a lot of people, ChatGPT is where they start with AI—writing, building, doing research, planning trips, shopping, or getting tasks done,” Turley noted.
