Sagrada Familia has completed the installation of the Savior Tower's apex
The world-famous Sagrada Família in Barcelona has reached an important architectural milestone. According to Ming Pao, last week the final component of the exterior structure—the three-dimensional cross at the top—was completed at a height of 172.5 meters. This event marked the completion of the exterior construction of the Jesus Tower, solidifying its status as the tallest Catholic church in the world.
History of the Centuries-Old Project
The renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed a plan for the Sagrada Família that included the construction of 18 monumental towers. When Gaudí died in 1926, only one tower had been completed. Over the past century, builders have made significant progress—this month, the Tower of the Savior, the fourteenth structure completed out of the planned complex, was finished.
Completion and Future Phases
Despite the exterior finishing, the Sagrada Família remains an active construction site. Interior work continues at full pace to meet the planned opening on June 10 of this year. This date is no coincidence—it coincides with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death, symbolizing the connection between the master’s vision from a century ago and its realization in the modern era. The completion of the Sagrada Família is not just an architectural victory but also a monument to human perseverance in bringing grand ideas to life.
