Let's see how much lucky money you've received this year.

Located in Foshan, Guangdong. In the picture below, each red envelope contains 5-100 yuan, a fine tradition of Guangzhou and Foshan~
Last night I went to play billiards and chatted with a staff member. She is from Sichuan. I asked her why she didn't go back home for the New Year. She said her monthly salary is only a few thousand yuan. Going back for the New Year costs at least 100 for the kids, 200 for elders, plus gifts for relatives, and her monthly salary isn't enough. She can't even afford the train tickets to go back.
When I was a kid, I thought red envelopes during the New Year were very little. Buying a Gameboy wasn't enough. As I grew up, I thought a 5-yuan red envelope was really great, with almost no pressure.
I've also seen some places where they give roughly equal amounts of red envelopes to children on the other side, and if it's less, they get scolded.
Perhaps this is one of the reasons why many people choose to travel during the New Year now—people spend less on red envelopes than on going out to play.
