The proportion of new energy power generation installed capacity surpasses coal power for the first time in Tianjin, accelerating the construction of a new power system

Economic Daily Tianjin, February 21 (Reporter Zhou Lin) — As of the end of December 2025, Tianjin’s new energy power generation installed capacity exceeded 14.84 million kilowatts, accounting for 44.59% of the city’s total power generation capacity, surpassing coal power to become the largest power source.

The significant increase in new energy power generation is closely related to Tianjin’s continuous improvement of its related industrial system. By 2025, Tianjin will accelerate the development of a new energy industry system featuring wind, solar, lithium, and hydrogen, aiming for an industrial output value of over 80 billion yuan, with an annual growth rate of more than 10%. Currently, Tianjin’s new energy industry chain includes more than 110 enterprises above designated size, covering subfields such as wind energy, photovoltaics, lithium batteries, and hydrogen energy.

To promote the development of the new energy industry, Tianjin has established innovative platforms such as the “Smart Grid” Innovation Consortium, the High-Efficiency Photovoltaic Technology R&D and Industrialization Innovation Consortium, and the Advanced Power Battery Innovation Consortium. State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company continues to optimize the grid network structure, enhance the regulation capacity of the power system, and strengthen scientific planning of the grid to support high-quality development of new energy.

“To adapt to the changes brought by large-scale decentralized integration of new energy, we are conducting targeted upgrades and transformations of relay protection and safety automatic control devices, optimizing safety protection strategies. Using weather warning systems, digital twin grids, virtual power plants, and other means, we strengthen the prediction of new energy power generation and load, optimize the startup methods of thermal power units, and achieve proactive safety warnings,” said Huang Zhigang, head of the Hydropower and New Energy Department at State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company.

Currently, Tianjin, based on its role as a super-large city’s end-user grid, aims for high penetration of new energy and high electrification rates, characterized by high resilience and high reliability, and is accelerating the construction of a new power system. Li Gang, director of the Energy Conservation and Comprehensive Utilization Department of Tianjin’s Industry and Information Technology Bureau, stated that by 2026, Tianjin will focus on promoting high-quality development of the new energy industry, accelerating technological iteration and mode innovation in the new energy sector, and driving the industry towards a “manufacturing + services” transformation.
