Milan Winter Olympics builds the first official large model for the Olympics based on Alibaba Qianwen

Shanghai Securities News China Securities Network News (Reporter Yang Xiangfei) — On February 5th, as the Milan Winter Olympics are about to commence, International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry announced at an international broadcast center event that the IOC has developed the first official large model in Olympic history based on Alibaba’s Qianwen large model. Coventry stated that thanks to the technological support of the Qianwen large model, the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics will showcase the intelligent future of the Olympic movement and may become the “most intelligent” Olympics in history.

Currently, the official Olympic large model will be implemented simultaneously for professional event management and public services.

On the event management side, the IOC has launched the “National Olympic Committee AI Assistant” on its website for staff of national Olympic committees. This assistant relies on the powerful multilingual understanding capabilities of the Qianwen large model and has read through millions of words of official manuals. Delegation members can ask questions in their native language to receive precise answers on issues ranging from qualification review to logistics scheduling.

On the public side, the IOC will also launch the “Olympics AI Assistant” based on the Qianwen large model on its official website. This assistant will be open to global audiences and can provide real-time, accurate answers to various questions about event rules and Olympic history.

Coventry said that Alibaba has always been a “transformative partner” for the Olympic movement. From Tokyo and Beijing to Paris, Alibaba Cloud has continuously promoted efficiency improvements and sustainability for the Olympics. She stated, “The technology of Alibaba’s Qianwen large model will bring smarter operations, deeper interaction, and new possibilities to the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, an automatic media description system based on the Qwen-VL model has been put into operation during live broadcasts, recognizing key events such as goals and fouls in real time and generating descriptions. AIGC technology has also been applied on a large scale for the first time in the content production of the Winter Olympics. The Milan Winter Olympics organizing committee has efficiently created a series of multimedia promotional materials for global fans based on Alibaba’s Wanshang large model. Wanshang’s powerful visual generation capabilities have injected new creative vitality into the digital dissemination of the Winter Olympics.

In addition to large model applications, Alibaba Cloud’s AI-enhanced broadcast special effects technology has reached new heights at this Winter Olympics. To address the unique issue of “uniform snowfield textures and lack of feature points causing visual blind spots,” Alibaba Cloud adopted multi-model fusion algorithms to solve the high-precision reconstruction challenge of snow scenes. This technology has been deployed in 10 core competition venues at the Milan Winter Olympics, covering more than two-thirds of the events, including alpine skiing, ski jumping, and ice hockey.

Furthermore, as the most geographically extensive Winter Olympics in history, Alibaba Cloud supported the construction of a transportation management system that has opened the “last mile” from cities into the Alpine mountains amid snow and wind. At the same time, Alibaba Cloud’s “Energy Efficiency Treasure” continues to operate, with a new “Energy Issue Tracking System” to support Milan Winter Olympics in achieving more sustainable goals through digital means.

“Every Olympic Games leaves a unique legacy, and the legacy of the Milan Winter Olympics will be—intelligentization. Specifically, it is AI-driven intelligence,” Coventry concluded in her speech. “This AI capability is the ‘eternal gift’ that the Milan Winter Olympics leaves to the world, and it will reshape the future of the Olympic movement.”
