Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced the new Canadian Defense Industrial Strategy during a press conference on February 17 local time. The strategy sets a series of important goals for Canada’s next decade, including awarding 70% of federal defense contracts to Canadian companies and achieving self-sufficiency in domestic procurement and maintenance of most military equipment. Additionally, this $6.6 billion strategy proposes increasing the availability of Canadian military equipment, raising the availability of naval vessels to 75%, land vehicles to 80%, and aircraft to 85%. The new Defense Industrial Strategy also lists ten industrial sectors in which Canada aims to establish dominance, including ammunition production, digital and cloud service development, sensors, space-based platforms for surveillance, training, and simulation, as well as special vehicle manufacturing.
