Google is expanding its cross-platform file sharing feature to more Android devices, allowing these devices to transfer files to iPhones via the AirDrop protocol. In the coming days, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold models will support Quick Share for AirDrop.

IT Home notes that Google announced compatibility between Quick Share and AirDrop as early as November last year, but this feature was initially limited to the latest Pixel 10 series devices.

With the interoperability of AirDrop, Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 devices can transfer files to iPhones, iPads, or Macs, providing an experience identical to AirDrop between Apple devices, without the need for internet connection.

Apple device users who want to receive files from Pixel phones need to set AirDrop visibility to “Everyone for 10 minutes.” After enabling this setting, files from Android devices will appear the same as AirDrop files sent from iPhones, with identical notification styles and receiving options. Files will be saved to the appropriate locations: photos to the Photos app, documents to the Files app.

Pixel users who want to receive files from Apple devices also need to enable “Everyone for 10 minutes” or enter receive mode via the Quick Share page. Files will be saved in the Files app.

Google states that the interoperability between Quick Share and AirDrop employs a multi-layer security design to ensure safe sharing regardless of platform. The features include secure sharing channels, system-level protections on Android and iOS, and user confirmation before receiving files.

Device-to-device connections are point-to-point, with data not passing through servers. During bidirectional file transfers, both Apple and Pixel devices will display the other device’s name for user verification.
