Trump Opposes UK Transfer of Chagos Islands Sovereignty to Mauritius Again

On the 18th, U.S. President Trump posted on social media, once again opposing the transfer of sovereignty over the Chagos Islands from the UK to Mauritius. Trump said on social media that he has been telling UK Prime Minister Stamer that signing a “century lease agreement” for Diego Garcia, the main island of the Chagos Islands, was a “major mistake,” and that the UK should not lose control of Diego Garcia.
Trump stated that if Iran decides not to reach an agreement with the United States, the U.S. military may have to use the airport on Diego Garcia and the UK’s Fairford Airport to prevent potential Iranian attacks, “these attacks could target not only the UK but also other friendly countries.” (Xinhua)
