In January, Indonesia significantly reduced high-nickel pig iron production

As of January 31, 2026, Mysteel surveyed 55 Indonesian nickel-iron smelting projects, involving a total of 267 BF/EF/RKEF production lines, with 3 new lines added within the month. In January, the actual nickel pig iron (NPI) production in Indonesia was 144,100 tons of metal, a month-on-month decrease of 9.31% and a year-on-year decrease of 2.31%. This month, Indonesia’s high-nickel pig iron output declined significantly, mainly due to the following reasons: first, management changes at a large Indonesian iron plant, shortages of nickel ore and coal, combined with substantial production cuts; second, profit-driven RKEF projects shifted to produce nickel in matte form; third, nickel ore supply on Little K Island and the main island was relatively tight, with projects concentrated on maintenance before the new year.
