On the 18th, Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party President Sanae Takaichi was elected as Japan’s 105th Prime Minister by the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors in the parliamentary nomination election.
That morning, the Japanese government held a cabinet meeting, and the entire first Takaichi cabinet resigned. Subsequently, the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors each held a prime minister nomination election.
In the House of Representatives prime minister nomination election, Takaichi received 354 votes out of 464 valid ballots; in the House of Councillors nomination election, after two rounds of voting, Takaichi ultimately received 125 votes out of 246 ballots.
Takaichi will next begin forming a new cabinet. That evening, after the appointment ceremony of the Prime Minister and the certification of cabinet ministers at the Imperial Palace, the new cabinet will be officially established.
Takaichi was elected as the LDP president on October 4 last year and elected as Japan’s 104th Prime Minister on October 21. On January 23 this year, Takaichi and all cabinet members held a cabinet meeting and passed a resolution to dissolve the House of Representatives, which was then dissolved. On February 8, Japan held a House of Representatives election, with the ruling party LDP significantly increasing its seats, surpassing two-thirds of the total seats in the House. According to the Japanese Constitution, the National Diet must be convened within 30 days after the House of Representatives election to elect the Prime Minister.
