There's an interesting piece of news. The 2016 Bitfinex theft that shook the entire crypto community—hacker Ilya Lichtenstein has recently been released early from prison.

This guy helped launder nearly 120,000 bitcoins, which were worth about $4.5 billion at the time. He was sentenced to 5 years in November 2024, so he was expected to be released around 2029. But he was released shortly after entering prison—because he participated in a reform program that qualified him for sentence reduction.

His wife Heather Morgan (online alias Razzlekhan) was sentenced to 18 months for aiding and abetting crime and was already released in October 2025.

This story is quite thought-provoking. On one hand, it highlights how serious security vulnerabilities at exchanges can be—just a single theft can involve such a massive amount of assets. On the other hand, it also reflects the legal system’s emphasis on remorse and rehabilitation. But for the crypto world, this case serves as a good warning: security measures, risk control processes, asset isolation... everything needs to be taken seriously, and no matter how cautious you are, it’s never too much.

No wonder the crypto world has been so chaotic recently. This guy is up to something again. 120,000 Bitcoins, worth 4.5 billion dollars, just gone like that. Exchanges really need to reflect. Early parole? Laughable. Admitting a mistake and doing some exercises can shorten your sentence? Then what are we honest retail investors aiming for? These two wives can commit crimes together and still get out of prison one after another. Truly model prisoners. Honestly, security still depends on oneself. Exchanges will never be 100% secure. By the way, are these two planning something in some corner again? It looks like the black history of the crypto world will have another chapter.

Damn, this reduction speed is even more exaggerated than BTC's price increase.

120,000 BTC just came out like that? We're still busy with risk control here.

120,000 Bitcoins just disappeared like that? Are exchange firewalls just paper-thin?
