From High-Profile Launch to Quiet Dissolution: U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Administrative Reform Experiment Ends Abruptly Before Completion

On November 24, multiple media sources including Reuters confirmed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), previously led by Elon Musk, has been officially dissolved—eight months ahead of its originally planned operating timeline.

Established by U.S. President Trump after taking office in January 2025, DOGE was designed to reduce the size of government and increase government efficiency. Although it was initially slated to run until July 2026, the department has now ceased to exist.

Led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk since its inception, DOGE implemented sweeping reforms in Washington, including downsizing federal agencies, cutting budgets, or shifting focus to Trump’s priorities.

However, reports indicate that Musk left DOGE earlier this year due to disagreements with the Trump administration team. Subsequently, the department saw a wave of personnel departures over the summer, further confirming outside speculation about its premature termination.

Meanwhile, U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Cooper confirmed in response to inquiries: “The department no longer exists,” adding that DOGE is no longer a centralized agency.

In fact, the OPM had already taken over many of DOGE’s functions, and its staff gradually vacated headquarters offices over the summer.

In summary, this news marks a major adjustment to the government reform initiatives pushed by the Trump administration early in its term. Although the department claimed to have saved significant expenditures through its reforms, these figures have never been externally verified due to a lack of public accountability mechanisms.
