Recursive Inscription Technology: A New Chapter in the Bitcoin Ecosystem
Recently, Raph, the new chief maintainer of the Bitcoin protocol Ordinals, merged an important update on Github. This technology, known as "recursive inscriptions," was proposed by the founder of Ordinals and will bring revolutionary changes to the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Recursive inscriptions are an innovative way of blockchain inscription characterized by its ability to self-reference. Unlike traditional standalone inscriptions, recursive inscriptions allow the use of special syntax "/-/content/: inscription ID" to call the content of other inscriptions, and this simple change opens up infinite possibilities for creators.
A significant advantage of this technology is the substantial reduction in transaction costs. In the past, creating a PFP (profile picture) collection containing 10,000 individual JPEG files required enormous expenses, whereas now it only takes inscribing about 200 basic features and then combining these features through new syntax to generate the complete collection. This not only saves costs but also breaks through the size limitations of individual inscriptions.
From a technical perspective, recursive inscriptions have fundamentally changed the way NFT collections are created. The traditional method involves combining and then uploading the complete image, whereas recursive inscriptions involve uploading the base elements first and then calling them together via code. This method not only saves a significant amount of resources but also offers more possibilities for subsequent creations.
The application prospects of recursive inscriptions are vast:
Composable NFTs/inscription collections: Artists can create secondary works based on existing pieces, greatly enhancing the possibilities of artistic creation.
