The Strait of Hormuz has seen toll fee scams, with ships already being deceived and subjected to gunfire.
Golden Finance reports that on April 21, according to Al Jazeera, Greece’s maritime risk management company MARISKS warned that unidentified individuals are impersonating Iranian authorities and sending messages to some shipping companies, requesting that they pay transit fees in cryptocurrency in exchange for permission to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The company said: “These specific messages are scams; these emails are not sent by Iranian authorities.” “MARISKS said that, based on its understanding, at least one ship attempting to leave the strait on Saturday was a victim of this scam. Due to Iran re-closing the Strait of Hormuz in response to the United States’ blockade of its ports, hundreds of ships and about 20,000 sailors are stranded in the Gulf region, unable to pass through. ”(Jin10)
