Iranian Parliament Reviews Proposal to Govern the Strait of Hormuz
Golden Finance reports that on April 6, according to a report from Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency on April 5, the Iranian Islamic Parliament discussed multiple proposals regarding the governance of the Strait of Hormuz that day, addressing relevant issues from the legal, environmental, security, and economic perspectives. The meeting unanimously agreed to establish a special committee for the related work to be carried out next, and ultimately finalized a comprehensive plan and legal safeguard documents for exercising jurisdiction over the Strait of Hormuz. On March 30, the National Security Committee of the Iranian Islamic Parliament approved the Strait of Hormuz management plan, establishing the role of Iran’s armed forces in oversight and control, and clearly prohibiting the passage through the strait by vessels from the United States, Israel, and countries that impose unilateral sanctions on Iran. The plan also includes shipping safety, environmental protection, financial arrangements, and a tariff system, as well as cooperation with Oman on the other side of the strait within the framework of legal mechanisms.
