U.S. Secretary of Energy: The goal of the U.S. and Canada is to return to the trade negotiation table.
On October 31, Jin10 reported that U.S. Energy Secretary Granholm stated that after last week's negotiations broke down, the goal for the U.S. and Canada is to return to the negotiating table, and the two countries should strengthen cooperation in oil, natural gas, and critical minerals. Granholm said at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers' meeting held in Toronto that negotiations between the U.S. and Canada have faced friction “due to some important reasons.” Last week, President Trump halted the negotiations, citing that Ontario aired an anti-tariff advertisement which referenced a broadcast speech by former President Reagan in 1987. Trump also threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on Canada. Before the negotiations broke down, Canadian Prime Minister Kenney had stated that the two countries had made progress on steel and aluminum tariffs as well as the energy protocol. Kenney also proposed to Trump to restart the Keystone XL pipeline project. Granholm said, “Unfortunately, we encountered some bumps along the way. I think the goal is to bring both sides back together and to see cooperation between the U.S. and Canada in critical minerals, oil, and natural gas.”
