Không gì có thể kìm hãm việc mở rộng tiền tệ—kể cả chiến tranh. Trong các cuộc xung đột lớn, chính phủ luôn tăng cung tiền để tài trợ cho nhu cầu quân sự và kinh tế. Trong Thế chiến I (1913–1920), Mỹ tăng cung tiền M2 khoảng 117%. Sang Thế chiến II (1939–1948), cơ sở tiền tệ của Mỹ tăng 149%, còn M2 tăng gần 200%.

Pháp cũng đi theo xu hướng này khi gần như tăng gấp bốn cung tiền (~300%) trong Thế chiến I. Trường hợp cực đoan nhất là Đức Quốc xã trong Thế chiến II (1938–1945), với mức tăng khoảng 432%. Những con số này cho thấy một quy luật lặp lại: chiến tranh càng lớn, mở rộng tiền tệ càng mạnh, để lại tác động dài hạn lên nền kinh tế.
