According to the Financial Times, Maroš Šefčovič, the EU's top trade negotiator, expects US President Trump to impose tariffs of about 20% on the EU next week. The commissioner, based on his personal assessment after talks with the United States, said the tariffs would be "around 20 percent," two people familiar with the matter said. The United States has not indicated that there will be any exemptions or exceptions. According to the first official briefed on the negotiations, Šefčovič warned US officials that imposing a 20 percent tariff on goods imported from the EU would be "devastating" for the EU. The level of tariffs in the United States will be higher than at any stage since the introduction of the Common Trade Policy by the founding members of the European Union in the late 50s.
