Trump calls for: Senate Republicans should abolish the filibuster to break the government shutdown deadlock
According to Deep Tide TechFlow news, on October 31, Jin10 reported that as the government shutdown continued for nearly a month, U.S. President Trump urged Senate Republicans to vote to abolish the Senate's filibuster rule. Trump stated late Thursday night on social media: “Given that Democrats have completely 'gone crazy,' the choice is clear—invoke the 'nuclear option' to abolish the filibuster and make America great again.” Due to the Senate's filibuster rule, most legislation requires 60 votes to pass. While a majority of lawmakers can modify these rules, both parties have essentially refused to do so in order to retain their ability to influence legislation when they are the minority. In a recent funding standoff, Democrats refused to support a temporary funding bill proposed by Republicans unless the GOP agreed to extend medical subsidies. This is not the first time Trump has called for the abolishment of the filibuster; during his first term, he made such claims multiple times as his legislative efforts were blocked in the Senate. Senate Republican leader Thune stated earlier this month that the party would not use the so-called 'nuclear option' to push through the funding bill. When asked if the White House was pushing for this move, Thune reiterated his opposition, stating, “We have not discussed this topic.”
