Strait of Hormuz Tensions Trigger Pressure on Gold

Focus on Gold:

Escalation of conflict in the Strait of Hormuz and spike in oil prices
Strengthening US dollar and expectations of high interest rates
Friday, April 24, 2026 – Gold prices opened weaker at $4,695 per troy ounce, pressured by rising global inflation concerns amid escalating Middle East conflicts. Tensions between the US and Iran have flared again after Iran tightened control over the Strait of Hormuz, including reports of cargo ship seizures and military activities along the strategic route. Amid uncertainty, hopes for continued peace negotiations remain limited, reinforcing risk-off sentiment in global financial markets.

From a macroeconomic perspective, the surge in energy prices has sparked concerns of higher inflation, which could strengthen expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates high for longer. Surveys indicate potential delays in rate cuts for up to six months ahead. This condition is reflected in the strengthening of the US dollar and the rise in 10-year US government bond yields to the highest level in over a week. On the other hand, employment data shows unemployment benefit claims increased more than expected, though not enough to shift monetary policy direction in the near term.

Looking ahead, gold movements are expected to remain volatile with a downward bias, influenced by geopolitical developments and global monetary policy trends. Market participants will monitor upcoming US economic data releases, including inflation (PCE), PMI, and other economic activity data as key indicators of interest rate expectations. Additionally, dynamics in the Strait of Hormuz and potential escalation of conflicts will be major factors affecting energy prices and market sentiment.

Technically, the nearest support levels for gold are around $4,654 to $4,614, while the nearest resistance is at $4,744 to $4,794. If selling pressure increases, deeper support is seen at $4,524, while medium-term resistance is in the $4,884 area.
