Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details. If you're getting the SRD grant or permanent benefits, the process is actually different for each one, which is confusing.
For permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you have to go to a SASSA office in person. No shortcuts. You need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months), and they'll give you a form to fill out. The account has to be in your name only—no joint accounts or anything. Takes up to 21 working days to process, so submit before the 15th of the month if you want it sorted before next payment.
Phone number changes are similar—you either visit the office or call 0800 60 10 11 for help. Some things can be done over the phone but they might still want you to come in.
Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier. Everything's online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, you click it and add your new bank details. Same rule though—account must be in your name. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify.
To change your phone number for SRD, go to their contact details page, enter your ID and application ID, put in your new number, they send you an OTP to verify. Pretty straightforward.
One thing—watch out for fake websites trying to scam you into changing your number. Only use the official SASSA links. If the online thing isn't working, just call them or go to your local office. Waiting times suck but it's safer.
