Just realized a lot of newcomers in crypto don't actually understand what PNL means. It's one of those terms you see everywhere but nobody really explains properly. Let me break it down because honestly, if you're trading, you need to know this stuff.
PNL stands for Profit and Loss, and there are two types you should care about. First, there's unrealized PNL. That's the gain or loss you're sitting on right now while your trade is still open. Say you bought ETH at 3,000 and it's now trading at 2,200. You technically have an unrealized loss of 800, but it's not locked in yet. The second you close that position, boom, it becomes realized PNL. Now it's real. If you sell at that price, your realized loss is -800. That's the difference, and it matters way more than people think.
Then there's today's PNL. This one's actually super useful if you want to track your daily performance. It literally just sums up everything you made or lost in a single day. You'll see it displayed in green if you're up, red if you're down. The thing is, it updates constantly, so you can watch it shift throughout the day. Some people obsess over it, which honestly isn't healthy, but checking it regularly helps you understand whether your strategy is actually working.
Here's the real talk: understanding your PNL isn't about bragging or crying about losses. It's about being honest with yourself about your trading decisions. When you see that green or red number, it's forcing you to face reality. Did you cut losses fast enough? Did you take profits when you should have? These questions matter way more than the actual number.
Looking at the current market, BTC is sitting around 71.27K with a small gain of 0.11%, ETH is at 2.20K up 0.20%, while BNB dropped 2.03% to 605.80. So if you had positions in any of these, your PNL would be reflecting these moves right now. That's exactly why tracking what does PNL mean and how it works is crucial.
Seriously, spend five minutes understanding your PNL dashboard. It's the difference between trading blind and actually knowing what's happening with your money. Drop a comment if you want me to explain any other trading terms that confuse you.
